Machakos County is mourning the untimely death of two children that drowned while swimming in a quarry.
The 2 boys aged ten and thirteen had gone for a swim on Thursday evening in Kathaana village located in Kangundo sub-county.
The Kangundo Sub-county police commander Mr.Zechariah Bitok confirmed that the incident took place on Thursday evening, 25th August 2022.
“There are 2 children who have drowned at Kathaana in the quarries.I think they were trying to swim or something like that. They are aged 13 and 10,” stated Zechariah Bitok.
Bitok used the unfortunate happening to warn parents against letting their children swim in quarries. According to the police commander, quarries are not only a safety hazard but also pse health risks to people accessing it. When it rains, quarries get filled up with all the dirt and refuse in the environment which could harm one’s health.
The police commander said that he will take up the role of sensitizing the community memners living in similar areas about such risks.
The lifeless bodies of the two boys were pulled out of the quarry and taken to Kangundo Level 4 Hospital mortuary for preservation as they await post-mortem.
The investigations into the incident have since been launched.
