Classes across all primary schools-public and private- will be conducted between 8 am to 3.45 pm according to a directiveby Education CS Ezekiel Machogu.
In essence, the CS has banned early morning and evening classes in all schools across the country.
Speaking on Monday at Nairobi Primary Junior Secondary School the CS said some teachers are known to coerce students to attend organized extra classes late in the evening and early in the morning before 8 am.
He directed school heads to ensure this directive is followed saying that students should not be subjected to long studying hours as it is strains them.
“The stipulated time is 8am to 3.45pm. We don’t want to subject the kids to strain. Kids should sleep for nine hours,” Machogu said.
He gave a stun warning to schools who send their buses to pick children as early as 5 am to take them for early classes.
The CS asked school heads to shun keeping students within school premises up to late in the evening.
“The syllabus should be covered appropriately between the stipulated time. Let us not subject pupils to unnecessary mental torture,” he said.
