State to Fast-Track Cases of Mothers with Children in Prison-PS Muthoni

February 1, 2023

The State Department of Correctional Services and the Judiciary are working to fast-track cases of mothers with children in prison to aid early release.

This was said on Monday by Principal Secretary, State Department for Correctional Services, Mary Muthoni when she made an impromptu visit to the Nakuru main prison.

She said the move is aimed at reducing the number of minors in correctional facilities in the country.

She noted that these children growing under such circumstances are prone to abuse, diseases and stigma.

Muthoni said that there are over 300 children, under four years, spread across different correctional and detention facilities across the country with Nakuru Women Prison hosting 10 children.

“As of January 30, we had ten children at the Nakuru Women’s Prison. In facilities across the country, there are about 300 children below the age of four. This is a high number,” she said.

“The judiciary is doing its best to review the cases of these mothers and ensure that they are completed. As long as they have not committed capital crimes and if they are petty offenders they should be released,” the PS said.

The PS added that such offenders can be attached to community services such as cleaning government offices for a period of time until they serve their term.
