A -13- years old boy from DEB Primary School in Naivasha died by suicide earlier this week.
The police report indicates that the boy hanged himself in his parent’s house. It is said the boy had gone home to seek medication for a headache before taking his life in unclear circumstances.
This now brings to four the number of students who have taken their lives in and around the lakeside town in 2023.
Kinuthia John from the Naivasha GBV cluster group said the boy had not complained about anything and showed no signs of distress.
However, he said, that many suicide cases in the area among young people have been attributed to drug abuse, depression, and financial constraints.
“We are concerned by the rising number of suicide among students and we have launched a campaign where we are encouraging them to speak out,” he said.
Benjamin Boen, Naivasha OCPD, confirmed the incident saying there was no suicide note left by the victim.
He added that the body has been collected and taken to the local mortuary and we have opened an inquest file as part of investigations.
