All day primary and secondary schools within Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu counties will remain closed today due to the ongoing antigovernmental three days protests, the government has said.
In a statement, the government through the Ministry of Interior and National Administration said the decision was reached as a measure to ensure the safety of school children.
It continued to say that the Ministry of Education shall announce the resumption of learning in the affected areas upon assessment of the security situation.
This comes after 51 students from New Kihumbuini Primary School in Kangemi were treated in a local hospital after a tear gas canister was thrown into their classroom during last week’s Wednesday protests.
According to the school head teacher Eunice Onyango, most of those injured are from the grade seven block where 47 girls and four boys inhaled the fumes prompting them to be taken to the hospital.
It was also reported that one of the pupils was rushed back to the hospital for further treatment and was admitted to continue with treatment.
As a consequence of this incident, half the pupils didn’t attend school the following day.
