The image shows a road destroyed by a suspected gas explosion in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This image shared on Twitter on 24 July 2023 supposedly of a destroyed road in River Road is FALSE.
“Avoid River road if you can,” reads the tweet.
By performing a Google reverse image search, Mtoto News established that the image is of Bree Street in Johannesburg, South Africa.
News of the blast was also covered by other publications such Al Jazeera, All Africa , Times Live and SABC News.
Reports indicate that the road may have been damaged by an underground gas explosion. However, no conclusive finding has been made as investigation is still underway.
On 24 July 2023, Johannesburg’s executive mayor Kabelo Gwamanda reported that one person died and 48 sustained injuries as a result of the incident.
Mtoto News examined a photo on Twitter supposedly showing a destroyed road in River Road, Nairobi and found it to be FALSE.
