This image posted on Facebook purportedly showing Eldoret residents demonstrating on 28 August 2023 in Eldoret is FALSE.
The photo was accompanied by a Swahili text that reads “Maandamano in Eldoret! Mbona hawa watu wanaharibu barabara? Wapi live bullets? Yaani walipigia Ruto kura halafu wanataka kutorokea ughaibuni. Tunalipa tu wote ushuru… Thanks Mandago, Thanks First Choice.”
Which roughly translates to “Demonstration in Eldoret! Why are these people destroying the road? Where are the live bullets? That is, they voted for Ruto and then they want to escape abroad. All of us are paying the taxes… Thanks Mandago, Thanks First Choice.
On 28 August 2023, a section of Eldoret residents who had enlisted with a recruitment agency staged protests after the company failed to fulfill its promise of facilitating their employment abroad.
However, upon conducting a reverse image search on Tineye, we established that the image had been taken out of context and did not accurately reflect the situation in Eldoret.
Alamy.com published the image and indicated that it had been taken during anti-government protests in Mathare, Nairobi on 12 July 2023.
The image was also published by CNN and Voice of America. Both publications reported that the photo was from Mathare, Nairobi.
Mtoto News investigated an image posted on Facebook purportedly showing Eldoret residents demonstrating on 28 August 2023 in Eldoret and found it to be FALSE.
