FALSE: This video claiming a Kenyan was elected mayor of New York City is misleading

The mayor of New York is a US citizen.

This video shared on TikTok claiming that a Kenyan was elected mayor of New York City in the United States of America, is FALSE.

The video depicts New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressing a gathering, with the flags of Kenya and the United States hoisted at the event.

“A Kenyan has been elected the mayor of New York City, the economic center of USA,” the video was captioned.

But, is Mayor Adams a Kenyan?

We conducted a keyword search on Google and discovered that Mayor Eric Adams is indeed a US citizen born in Brownsville, New York, USA, on September 1, 1960.

His biography published by New York City indicates that he served in the police department and State Senate before moving to the mayor’s office.

To verify the authenticity of the video, Mtoto News conducted a Google reverse image search and found a similar clip shared by the Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency.

According to the Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency, the video was captured at a historic event where the Kenyan flag was raised for the first time in New York city.

“When we raise this flag, we raise the energy and spirit of the people of Kenya that you are part of the New York experience. Your contribution, your commitment, your song, your dance, your food, your culture, your energy is united with the greatness of this great city,” Mayor Adams said in the video. 

The video was also shared by Mayor Adams and the Kenyan Embassy in Washington DC, USA.

According to the Kenyan Embassy in Washington DC, the Kenyan flag was raised at the Bowling Green Park in Manhattan to mark Madaraka day (Internal Self Government).

Mtoto News examined a video on Tiktok purporting that a Kenyan was elected mayor of New York City in the United States of America and found it to be FALSE.
