This post shared on X (formerly Twitter) with a photo purportedly showing floods in Nairobi is FALSE.
Published on 4 November 2023, the post alleges that Nairobi is flooded. It is accompanied by an image showing vehicles submerged in water.
“Where are the boats which Johnson Sakaja bought? Nairobi is flooded yet someone pocketed El Nino money! Time to prepare for Babu Owino in 2027,” reads the post.
The country has been experiencing heavy downpour in the past two weeks. According to the Kenya Meteorological department, the country is experiencing El Nino.
Mtoto News conducted a Google reverse image search and found this X post by NTV Kenya, which published a similar image indicating that it was taken after heavy rains in Mombasa.
According to NTV Kenya, the meteorological department said the El Niño phenomenon is due to abnormally warm sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean, leading to widespread flooding.
The incident was also reported by Nation Africa and Kenyans.co.ke.
