New York, 22 September 2024 – World leaders have agreed on a special plan called the “Pact for the Future,” which aims to make our world safer, fairer, and better for everyone. This plan includes exciting ideas like connecting everyone to the internet and ensuring we take care of the Earth for future generations.
The Pact was created to help countries work together on big issues that affect all of us, like climate change, technology, and peace. It’s a promise from world leaders to make the world a better place, especially for young people and those who will live in the future.
What’s in the Pact?
- Peace and Safety: The plan includes promises to make the world more peaceful by preventing wars and making sure all countries, especially in Africa, have a fair say in global decisions. There’s also a promise to stop the use of dangerous weapons, like nuclear bombs and lethal robots.
- A Healthier Earth: The Pact includes strong goals to protect the planet, like reducing pollution, using more renewable energy like solar power, and making sure the global temperature doesn’t rise too much. Countries also agreed to help each other financially, especially poorer nations, to achieve these goals.
- Technology for Everyone: One of the coolest parts of the Pact is the “Global Digital Compact,” which focuses on using technology for good. Leaders want to connect every person, school, and hospital to the internet. They also agreed to create rules to make the internet a safe place for everyone, especially kids. There’s even a plan to work together to govern Artificial Intelligence (AI) so that it helps people instead of causing harm.
- Listening to the Young: The Pact makes a promise to listen to young people and include their ideas in making important decisions. They are also thinking about future generations, with a plan to have an envoy, or special representative, for the future.
- Protecting Human Rights: The agreement also includes promises to protect human rights and ensure that people working to defend those rights are safe. There is a strong push for gender equality, meaning equal rights for boys and girls, men and women.
Who Helped?
Many people from around the world contributed to making this Pact possible. Over 4,000 leaders and groups, including more than 7,000 people from different parts of society, came together to share their ideas. Even before the official meetings, a group of people pledged $1.05 billion, which is a lot of money😁 to help make sure everyone can access the internet.
This Pact for the Future is just the beginning, and world leaders will keep working to make sure the promises they made turn into real actions that improve lives for all people—especially children, young people, and future generations.
