Mtoto News recently attended the media breakfast for the First Lady Mazingira Awards, themed “Children and Climate Action.” The event took place at The Stanley Hotel in Nairobi and was organized by Mama Doing Good. This initiative aims to celebrate and nationally recognize young learners who have made significant contributions to addressing climate change. The inaugural Mazingira Awards will be held on October 10th, coinciding with Mazingira Day.

Dr. Festus Ngeno, the Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, urged young learners to seize this opportunity to become vocal advocates for the planet and engage their communities in meaningful discussions about conservation and climate resilience. Florence Amoit, Secretary of Administration at the State Department of Basic Education, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the program is designed to be learner-centered and fosters creativity among students.

“The First Lady’s Mazingira Awards (FLAMA) provide an exceptional platform for our young learners—who represent the future of this nation—to express their creativity, solutions, and understanding of the pressing environmental and climate challenges we face,” Dr. Ngeno stated.

“As a government, we are committed to fostering an environment where learners explore their passions, think critically, and collaborate effectively,” added Florence Amoit from the State Department of Basic Education.

With the support of the Office of the First Lady, this program seeks to boost creativity among learners in matters of climate change, empowering them to become ambassadors for a sustainable future.
