Majengo: Teen Shot by Police Sparks Violent Protests

A police shooting in Majengo, Pumwani, has led to violent protests after 17-year-old Ibrahim Ramadhan was shot dead by an officer on the night of March 4, 2025. Ibrahim, a student at Kamukunji High School, was shot in the head and later died while receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital.

His mother shared his last moments, saying he had left home for evening prayers after reminding her to prepare his meal. Before going to the mosque, he brought home a five-litre container of cooking oil. Later, she saw police harassing young men, demanding bribes, and scattering food. Ibrahim arrived, spoke briefly with her, and stepped outside. A police officer, trying to escape an angry crowd, fired four shots. The fourth bullet hit Ibrahim after another person in front of him dodged it.

A child rushed to tell Ibrahim’s mother about the shooting. She found him injured and desperately looked for help. She took a boda boda to Mama Lucy Hospital, but doctors refused to treat him without approval from the OCS. When the OCS arrived, he told her Ibrahim was fine and getting an X-ray. However, Ibrahim was later moved to Kenyatta National Hospital, where he passed away.

His death sparked large protests in Majengo. Angry youth blocked roads, set fire to the area chief’s office, police cars, and private vehicles. On Wednesday morning, the protests grew more intense. Police fired live bullets in the air and used tear gas to control the situation, but tensions remained high.

Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan condemned the killing, calling for urgent action against the officer responsible. “Ibrahim’s death is a tragedy. His life was full of potential, but it was cut short. This is not the first time such an incident has happened. We need justice. The officer must be held accountable,” he said.
