ECDE pupils in Kiambu County will soon enjoy free lunch after Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi promised to launch a free feeding programme.
Additionally, he said he will build 400 classes to ensure all children enjoy quality education.
He was speaking during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebration in Kiringiti Stadium where he said he will strike a working formula with elected leaders for all students in future to be incorporated into the free feeding programme.
“I will enroll to a feeding programme all students in the county and I will work with elected leaders, “Wamatangi said.
President William Ruto during his presidential bid campaign in May had endorsed a proposal to implement a school feeding programme in all public primary schools countrywide.
He said his government would implement the project in schools across Kenya saying this would increase the retention of pupils in schools and ensure a better diet for the children.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja had also promised to introduce school feeding programme in all schools in Nairobi County.
Last year, Sakaja drafted and tabled The National School Lunch Bill, which if passed, will make it mandatory for the government to make quality, low-cost meals available to pupils.
The programme will be implemented through a public-private partnership where select NGOs will be tasked with serving subsidized nutritious meals to promote the health and well-being of learners.
