A couple from Leparua, Isiolo North constituency was arrested after subjecting their six months old daughter to female Genital Mutilation, FGM.
The two were seized hours after the child was rescued and rushed to Isiolo Referral Hospital and admitted.
According to Isiolo Sub-County Police Commander Collins Sainna, the mother was released to take care of the child under police watch will the father was detained awaiting charges. He added that the woman will be prosecuted after the child recovers.
“We are interrogating the father to know who carried out the cut and if there were accomplices so that we can arrest them and arraign them for the offence,” Mr Sainna said
A health official at the hospital told the media that the child was taken there with a large wound but had since been stabilized.
Isiolo Gender Watch executive director Grace Lolim said the girl might have been booked for marriage to an old man later in life.
‘This is absurd and unheard of. Most girls subjected to this vice are between nine and 12 years so it absurd that the couple mutilated a half year old baby,’ she said.
Isiolo Interfaith Network chairperson Ahmed Sett condemned the act and asked the government to bring to book all those involved.
Around 4 million, or one in five, women and girls have been subjected to FGM in Kenya and the prevalence of the vice is at 21 percent.
