The image is of anti-government protests in Nairobi on 12th July 2023

This image posted on Facebook purportedly showing Eldoret residents demonstrating on 28 August 2023 in Eldoret is FALSE.

The photo was accompanied by a Swahili text that reads “Maandamano in Eldoret! Mbona hawa watu wanaharibu barabara? Wapi live bullets? Yaani walipigia Ruto kura halafu wanataka kutorokea ughaibuni. Tunalipa tu wote ushuru… Thanks Mandago, Thanks First Choice.”

Which roughly translates to “Demonstration in Eldoret! Why are these people destroying the road? Where are the live bullets? That is, they voted for Ruto and then they want to escape abroad. All of us are paying the taxes… Thanks Mandago, Thanks First Choice.

On 28 August 2023, a section of Eldoret residents who had enlisted with a recruitment agency staged protests after the company failed to  fulfill its promise of facilitating their employment abroad.

The image was also published by CNN and Voice of America. Both publications reported that the photo was from Mathare, Nairobi.
