Garissa Teacher Accused of Defiling Children Granted 14-Day Detention for Investigation

May 3, 2024

In Garissa, detectives have been granted a 14-day extension to detain a suspected paedophile accused of molesting six children aged between 5 to 9 years. Aden Ali, a teacher, was apprehended by the police following reports implicating him in cases involving sexual harassment, assault, and defilement of children under his care.

Ali appeared in court on Thursday, where detectives requested further detention to allow for the collection of statements from parents of the alleged victims. Garissa sub-county Police Commander Edward Imbwaga disclosed that Ali was arrested promptly on Wednesday to prevent any attempts to flee.

Since his apprehension, additional families have come forward to provide statements to the police.

“Aden Ali was apprehended on suspicion of molesting young children. Today, we have sought several days to continue our investigation and gather statements from the victims as well as P3 forms,” said Imbwaga.

Of particular concern to investigators is the fact that Ali was a teacher to the children he is accused of defiling. Currently, Ali is being held at Garissa Police Station pending the conclusion of investigations.

Human rights activists in Garissa have highlighted the prevalence of defilement cases, urging parents to remain vigilant regarding their children’s safety at school.

“We are currently inundated with cases, and the rate is alarming. Children are being defiled even within school premises, and in some instances, we find politicians attempting to interfere, which we will not tolerate,” remarked Garissa County Gender CEC Hawa Abdi Sahal.

Activist Muktar Dahir Osman added, “We will collaborate tirelessly to end these abuses… the incidents of rape and sodomy have surged, especially among the youth.”

The Chairperson of the Muslim Lawyers of Kenya condemned the incident, promising to pursue justice for the young victims.

Human rights advocates stress the importance of conducting comprehensive background checks on teachers before entrusting them with children.
