Over 39,000 Cases of Child-on-Child Sexual Abuse in One Year

Child-on-child sexual abuse is a serious issue in England and Wales. In 2023, police recorded 115,489 cases of child sexual abuse and exploitation. More than 39,000 (52%) were committed by children aged 10-17.

These offences included physical abuse (58%) and sharing indecent images (41%). One reason for the rise is that young people have more access to harmful online content. This shows the need for better parental controls, digital education, and awareness.

Child sexual abuse is a global problem. One in four girls and one in twenty boys experience sexual abuse before turning 18. In most cases, the abuser is someone the child knows, like a family member or trusted adult. Abuse often happens in private settings, making it harder to detect and stop.

The effects can last a lifetime. Survivors are more likely to suffer from mental health issues like depression and PTSD. Many struggle with relationships, face higher risks of STDs, or even attempt suicide. Many cases go unreported, meaning the actual numbers are likely much higher.

Studies show that 95% of child sexual abuse cases can be prevented through education and awareness. Teaching children about personal safety, spotting warning signs, and creating safe spaces can make a difference. However, stigma and lack of resources make it hard to implement these programs.

Child sexual abuse costs society billions every year in healthcare and lost productivity. But the emotional impact on survivors and their families is even greater.

We need action from everyone, governments, schools, healthcare workers, and communities. Stronger laws, better mental health support for survivors, and more education on abuse prevention are key to protecting children and reducing these numbers.
