Through Digital Literacy Program, the government is set to roll out the implementation of the computer coding curriculum support material on a pilot basis targeting public primary and secondary school this week.
The pilot project will include 100 public primary and 50 public secondary schools that have been chosen by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Authority from across the country.
Later the program will be fully rolled out to over 22, 000 public schools in the country.
Kodris Africa CEO Mugumo Munene speaking last week during a media breakfast at Nairobi Hotel said adding coding to the school curriculum will enhance students’ technological skills and put them on the scope in the ever-growing world of technology.
In this he said this will prepare students for the job market.
“In the next 3-5 years, at least 55 per cent of all jobs in Kenya will require digital skills as employers are seeking for a productive workforce that is digitally skilled,” he said

Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), has already been approved the curriculum support material.
Charles Ong’ondo, Chief Executive Officer KICD said Kenya is the first country in Africa to reach this important education milestone of fast tracking coding lessons in the education system.
Since the flagship of Digital Literacy Program in 2013, 1.2 digital devices have been distributed to 22,891 public schools according to ICT Authority CEO Kipronoh Ronoh.
Moi University and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology have been identified by the government to manufacture these devices and 201,811 devices have been manufactured so far at an average rate of 400 devices per day.
