Notable Teachers in Kenya Recognized Internationally

Most of us if not all have gone through the hands of teachers who  molded us into wonderful human beings by doing tremendous and tedious work.

Although they are paid, it can never be enough as they do more than they are paid for. Their commitment and zeal to bring out the best in our children is unmatched.

In addition teachers are exemplary mentors and role models in the society and great society transformers.

Today, 5th October is World Teachers’ Day, a day set a side since 1994 to appreciate and celebrate educators including teachers, researchers and professors’ all over the world.

The theme for the World Teachers’ Day 2022 celebration is “The transformation of education begins with teachers.”

As we celebrate teachers’ Day here are some notable Kenyan teachers who have been recognized internationally for their impact in the education sector.

Peter Mokaya Tabichi

Peter Mokaya Tabichi is a Kenyan science teacher and Franciscan friar at Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani, Nakuru County. He shot to fame in 2019 after winning the Global Teacher Prize same year.

Mr Tabichi was praised for giving away 80 per cent of his monthly salary to help poor students in his school.

He won this years’ Outstanding Teacher/School Leader award at the 2022 Commonwealth Education Awards.

Ayub Mohamud

He was nominated for Global Teacher Prize Academy Award 2022. He was among top ten nominees for the prize. He has been fighting the specters of radicalization and violent extremism by creating a network of like-minded teachers and formulating new strategies for combatting extremism.

Jane Kimiti

Jane Kimiti, the principal of Othaya Girls’ High School, was announced the winner of the AU Continental Teacher Award for 2020. In 2019, TSC declared the principal as the winner of the Principal of the Year Award in 2019 for her magnificent contribution to modern and quality education in Othaya Girls through ICT integration.

 Amos Nyameino,

He is the head of ICT and Innovations department at Kasigau Girls High School in Voi. He was nominated in this year’s Commonwealth Outstanding Teacher category.

The Young teacher barely in his 30s has always been on the frontline of guiding and inspiring his students on areas of innovation and STEM at large.

This year he led his school to be crowned winners of the Diamond Challenge co-organized by Sote Hub.

 Leonida Chepkorir

She was nominated in this years’ Commonwealth Outstanding Teacher category and a teacher at Soi of Moi Forces Academy, Mombasa.

Ms Soi was also among the winners of the Global Teacher Award administered by AKS Education Awards.

In 2020 she won Global Teacher Award 2022 for her passion to champion for girls to learn how to code and pursue STEM careers in Moi Forces Academy Mombasa and Coastal region.
