Five Students Die in a Road Accident After Matatu Collides With Lorry in Naivasha

At least five students have died and seven others injured near Delamare estates in Naivasha along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway after a Nairobi-bound matatu they were traveling in collided with a lorry.

Confirming the incidence Emmanuel Bowen, Naivasha sub-county police commander, said the seven who suffered serious injuries were rushed to the Naivasha Sub-county hospital.

The students were heading home for the April holiday when the accident occurred this afternoon.

According to Bowen the matatu driver was trying to overtake several vehicles before the matatu collided head-on with the oncoming lorry He added the vehicle was speeding at the time of the accident.

School bags, personal belongings and other stationeries were dispersed all over the scene – indicating the impact of the accident.

Kenya Red Cross in a statement said the accident occurred at 1:55 pm when the PSV matatu from SWAT Sacco collided with a transit trailer and lost control before colliding with a lorry.

“Among the passengers were 11 students and a driver from Mbihi Friends High School. Our KRCS team has set up a tracing desk at the hospital to support the affected families,” the statement read in part

The latest statistics by National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicated that 1,072 people had lost their lives in the first three months of 2023.
