On February 22, 2025, children in Njiru Sub-County took part in a very special event called the Kenya Children Assembly (KCA) elections! Held at Salvation Church Army in Dandora, the elections brought together children from different schools to choose their leaders.
Just like in national elections, there were ballot boxes, voting booths, and even officials from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to make sure everything was fair.
The candidates, who were also children, gave speeches about what they would do if elected. They talked about important issues like making schools better, keeping children safe, and ensuring children can use the internet safely.
After voting, the winners were announced, and they will now represent children’s voices in different places, including meetings with adults who make decisions.
Being part of an election teaches children important lessons about leadership, fairness, and responsibility. It is not just about winning but also about making a difference! When children take on leadership roles, they learn to solve problems, become more confident, and prepare for the future.
The KCA gives children a chance to speak up about things that matter to them. For example, in 2011, Moraa was elected as a speaker in Kamukunji Sub-County.
Because of her experience, she was able to work with different people to support children’s rights and it even helped her get her first job! This shows that children’s leadership can have a real impact.
Through the KCA, children can talk about challenges like education and healthcare, especially for those in communities that struggle the most.
For children’s leadership to grow, adults need to support it. Schools can teach leadership skills, parents can encourage their children to participate, and policymakers should listen to children’s ideas.
The presence of IEBC officials at the elections shows that this is serious work, children are being prepared to be leaders not just in the future, but today.
Children’s voices matter! When children lead, they help create a better world for themselves and everyone.
