Nairobi, Kenya  March 26, 2026 The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has introduced new regulations requiring all mobile phones entering the Kenyan market to use USB Type-C charging ports. The directive, announced earlier this week, will apply to all new devices being imported, manufactured, or approved for sale in Kenya moving forward.

According to the Authority, the new rule is part of updated technical standards aimed at improving device quality, safety, and compatibility across the country. USB Type-C, which is already widely used globally, allows faster charging and makes it easier for users to use one charger for multiple devices.

The changes are also expected to help reduce electronic waste by limiting the need for different types of chargers.

The announcement, however, caused confusion among members of the public, especially on social media, where some reports claimed that low-cost phones had been banned.

In response, the CA clarified that the regulation does not affect phones already in the country. Devices currently in the market will continue to be sold and used as usual.

The Authority emphasized that the rule only applies to new phones entering the market after the directive was issued ,officials have urged Kenyans to rely on verified information from official sources and avoid spreading misinformation.

The move places Kenya among countries adopting modern charging standards, as part of efforts to improve user experience and align with global technology trends.
