Students Caught in Earthquake Panic on First Day of School in Philippines

On June 8,2026 ,a  strong earthquake hit the southern Philippines just as children were starting their new school year. The quake had a magnitude of about 7.8 and caused buildings to shake strongly, especially in Mindanao.

Many schools were affected while morning activities were happening. Children and teachers ran for safety as the ground shook, and some school buildings were damaged. In some places, parts of roofs and walls fell, causing fear and confusion.

Reports say 19 people were killed,12 remain missing and at least 134 were injured and. Rescue teams are working hard to find survivors, help the injured, and check damaged buildings.

Because of the damage, schools in the affected areas have been closed while safety checks are done. Authorities have also warned people to stay away from buildings that may still be unsafe because of aftershocks.

The earthquake also caused panic across nearby areas, and some coastal regions were briefly warned about possible sea waves, but the warning was later lifted.

Officials say the country will continue rescue work and help affected families, especially children whose learning has been interrupted.
