Eight Years of Mtoto News

Hello, my name is Alice, and I am a young journalist and advocate.

Eight years ago on 28th February, Mtoto News started with a simple yet powerful mission, which is to make children visible and to ensure they are seen as active participants, not just spectators. As we celebrate this incredible milestone, I can’t help but reflect on the impact this platform has had on my life.

Mtoto News has been more than just a media house, it has been a place of learning, growth, and opportunity. From the moment I joined, I stepped into a world filled with possibilities. One of the most eye-opening experiences for me was the Sauti Zetu program. Through it, I learned about digital safety, photography, writing, fact-checking, and the power of advocacy. These skills have shaped me into a confident storyteller and a more informed digital citizen.

Beyond training, Mtoto News has given me the chance to attend inspiring events and workshops. One of the most unforgettable moments was at an Innovation Week event at Safaricom, where I explored coding in the most unexpected way—using a Makey Makey kit and a banana to create a game! That experience showed me how technology and creativity can merge to build something exciting. Moments like these have fueled my passion for digital storytelling and innovation.

More than anything, Mtoto News has taught me to use my voice, step into important conversations, and engage with experts. Now, as an apprentice, I write child-friendly materials, using what I’ve learned to inform and inspire others.

As we celebrate eight years of impact, I recognize that Mtoto News is not just about media; it’s about empowering young people through its core pillars: Platform, Learning, Access, Field, Evidence, and Safety by Design. These values ensure that children like me are heard, protected, and given opportunities to thrive.

Looking ahead, I am excited for the future—more learning, more storytelling, and more advocacy. Because at Mtoto News, every child’s voice truly matters.
