Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro has started a new education program that will greatly reduce the cost of learning for families in his constituency in Murang’a County . Under this plan, parents will now pay only KSh 500 per term for their children in all day secondary schools in Kiharu, instead of many extra charges that used to make education expensive . The program, called Masomo Bora 2026, is supported through the Constituency Development Fund and is meant to make sure more children join secondary school and stay in class without being sent home for fees .
The MP announced the plan during a meeting with school heads, parents, and education officials, where he explained that the KSh 500 will be the only fee that parents are required to pay in these public day schools . This means there should be no extra development fees, registration charges, or other hidden costs that often burden parents, especially after the December holidays when money is tight for many families . Local education officials welcomed the move and said it can help reduce school dropouts if schools also plan and use the money well .
The Masomo Bora 2026 program does more than just lower school fees, it also supports students’ welfare in other ways :
- There is a full-week feeding program for all day scholars so that learners do not study while hungry, and the schools will serve chapati every last Friday of the month to motivate learners and keep attendance high . This feeding plan is expected to help students concentrate better in class and reduce the number of children who stay at home because there is no food at school .
- And to improve learning, the program has set aside KSh 10 million for revision books and other academic materials so that students can access enough resources as they prepare for exams .
- Each school will also receive KSh 50,000 for activities such as sports, music, drama, and clubs so that learners can grow their talents and enjoy co-curricular activities, not just classroom work .
In addition, about KSh 50 million will go into building and improving facilities like science laboratories and libraries to make sure students have a better environment for practical learning and reading .Remedial lessons, which are extra classes to help students who need more support, will be allowed but limited to KSh 1,000 per term, and they will be open even to students who come from outside Kiharu .
Teachers and principals will also receive rewards to encourage good performance ,top teachers will get trips to Mombasa, while principals of the best or most-improved schools in each ward will be taken for educational trips to Dubai or Malaysia . These rewards are meant to motivate school leaders and teachers to work harder so that learners perform better and schools keep improving .
