Grief has engulfed Mugoiri Girls High School in Murang’a County after a form four student drowned during a school trip on Sunday November 6.
It is reported that the tragic accident happened when 380 candidates had gone for a retreat dubbed steam off session in preparation to the upcoming national exam later this month.
The girls together with some teachers and parents had gone at a lodge in Kirinyaga on Saturday 5. The lodge which is located in a forest had a waterfall where the girl drowned as schoolmates, teachers and parents watched helplessly.
In the heat of the moment, another girl almost died as she tried to rescue the victim.
The information is said to have been shared by the school administration through a whatsapp group.
‘Greetings from Our Lady of Consolata Mugoiri girls. We are well in the Lord. Our Form 4s attended our annual steaming-off session on Saturday, November 5, 2022. Unfortunately, we regret to inform you that we lost one of our girls. Her mother was with her all through the journey. May her soul rest in eternal peace. Let’s all pray for the family during this sad moment,’ part of the message read
In another similar incident, last month, a form four student died after he went missing during a hike at Mt Longonot, Nakuru County.
The student identified as Enock Balemba, a student from Nyahururu Elite Secondary School, was found dead by a multi-agency rescue team while approaching the peak of the mountain.
The boy had bruises on his hands, seemingly showing that he had fallen along the way, and was also breathing heavily by the time he was found.
The multi-agency team hence airlifted the student to a Nairobi hospital for medical attention, but he was declared dead on arrival.
