A woman, 19, has been charged with subjecting a child to cruelty after a video she recorded and sent to her child’s father and later uploading it online emerged.
According to the court file, the suspect is said to have assaulted the infant on July 13 in their Mathare home by physically and verbally abusing the baby.
In the video which has gone viral on many social media platforms, the minor was assaulted while being dressed after bathing.
She was arrested after a member of the public reported the incident to a children’s rights group in Mathare after spotting it on Instagram which prompted police to be called on her.
It was reported that she ran away after she got wind that police are on her heels but later was arrested after returning home.
Before Senior Principal Magistrate Monica Kivitu of Makadara magistrate court, the suspect denied the charges pleading for a lenient bail condition, the Nation reported.
She was remanded in custody until 31 July to allow the preparation of a pre-trial report before the condition for bail is set.
The case will be mentioned on September 19 before the trial begins in January next year.
The child was placed in a children’s home for care and safety as the case is ongoing.
